Off-Duty ICE Agent Shot After Allegedly Attacking Elderly Fresno Homeowner

An extraordinary incident unfolded in Fresno on Friday, October 9, 2026, when an off-duty ICE agent was shot following an altercation with a homeowner. Read on for more details.

What Happened

A woman returned home around 3 a.m. and discovered a man sleeping on her front lawn. The woman told her 72-year-old father about the stranger, and he went outside to tell him to leave. Instead, the man allegedly became aggressive and attacked him.

When his daughter intervened, police stated that he attacked her, too. The father pulled out his legally owned firearm and shot the man once in the abdomen.

Then came an unexpected revelation.

The Identity Revealed

The stranger was identified as David Gonzalez, 32, an off-duty federal ICE agent from Texas. The daughter’s boyfriend, who happened to be an off-duty police officer, arrived after the shooting but before emergency responders, and handcuffed Gonzalez.

Police said Gonzalez appeared intoxicated, and the homeowner isn’t facing charges.

According to The Guardian, “it was not immediately clear for how long Gonzalez had been with ICE and what exactly he did for ICE.”

The Department of Homeland Security referred all questions about Gonzalez to the Fresno Police Department.

Police also confirmed that Gonzalez was alone at the time. It remains unclear why he was in the neighborhood or sleeping on the lawn.

Border Report noted that Gonzalez was “transported to a hospital in serious condition” and is currently facing charges including “felony assault, battery likely to cause great bodily injury, and felony vandalism.”

The Public Reacts

When ABC7 covered the incident on YouTube, people were able to have their say.

One person wrote in the comments, “If the person did things to get himself shot that’s the way it goes? The fact that he was employed by ICE is incidental and has NOTHING to do with our government in any way?”

Here are a few more responses from the discussion:

  • “If the ICE agent was drunk attacking people, he should get the full extent of the law.”
  • “So drunk man on your lawn call 911 don’t approach him otherwise unpredictable behavior may ensue.”
  • “The father had his right to self defense. I hope the agent gets the full punishment to the extent of the law.”
  • “Was he shot while he was sleeping on the yard and then claim he attacked father and woman after he got shot….more info and evidence needed any video?”
  • “What the?!! Passed out drunk? Hilarious. Then starts up shit with the homeowner and gets shot. Brilliant.”
