On October 14, 29-year-old Corey Peter Lane was arrested in connection with the theft of catalytic converters from seven trucks owned by the food-rescue organization Second Harvest, resulting in hardship for the vulnerable and needy.
What Happened?
It was the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend when the crime went down in the yard where the charity keeps its vehicles. Oakville News explained that the public responded with tips, so they were able to identify and track down Lane. That came after the police released surveillance footage.
According to the outlet, “He faces nine charges, including three counts of breaking and entering, three counts of failing to comply with a release order and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.”
A Second Suspect Is Sought
The police are also looking for a second person thought to have been involved in stealing the catalytic converters. Between the duo, seven of their thirteen trucks were put out of service, which was unfortunate because the trucks deliver much-needed food.
The damage was estimated at approximately C$80,000, and another business contributed C$60,000 toward repairs. At this time, Corey Peter Lane hasn’t been convicted of this particular crime.
A Prior Record
CityNews revealed that Acting Superintendent Jeff Bangild said that Lane was connected to two other theft cases involving catalytic converters.
The officer also mentioned that the motive to target these particular food trucks was probably built around “ease of access.”
Viewers React
When CityNews shared the coverage on YouTube, viewers were able to weigh in with their thoughts. One person said in the comments, “Allowing this crook out on bail & probation was the justice system’s first mistake. Let’s try to learn from this mistake.”
Here are a few other responses from the discussion:
- “Canada needs to be much tougher on people who commit crimes, they will never learn with just a slap on the hand.”
- “His family must be so proud…judge that allowed bail, really cares about the citizens.”
- “Stealing from a charitable organization providing food to the community has to be seriously low.”
- “Well he was out on bail for prior offenses, and he violated the bond, legally now he should be remanded until court because he breached the bond, but I guarantee the judge probably booted them out and if we found guilty, he’ll probably get probation instead of five years.”
Another person complained that crime is rising and folks are “getting sick” of it.
