The secret that Mariah is too ashamed to admit has ruined her marriage to Tessa Porter-Copeland (Cait Fairbanks) and she won’t say what it is, although Tessa threw out some guesses.
Mariah had gone out and got drunk one night and flashbacks in the show reveal he was a much older man-he looked older than Victor Newman (Eric Braeden).
Why Mariah would have been so enthralled with a man old enough to be her grandfather and slept with him is a mystery-even, apparently, to her!
Perhaps this stranger wasn’t so much of a stranger, maybe someone she knew from the cult she was in that was led by Ian Ward (Ray Wise).
That would certainly cause her to be ashamed of herself, more because of the cult ties than because of the infidelity.

Mariah couldn’t even speak the details to her mother, Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) because she was so ashamed-if the older man had ties to the cult, that would be understandable.
Mariah’s sense of shame won’t allow her to forgive herself, even though she was seriously snockered at the time the indiscretion happened.
It’s possible Mariah believes the theory that being drunk or high merely lowers one’s inhibitions, and inside lurk the monstrous misbehaviors.
That could be an explanation to why Mariah’s too afraid to share the truth or even hint to anyone what happened-she can’t face what she thinks is inside! But then something happens that she simply can’t deal with and she feels the walls closing in!
