When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exited the Royal Family, they were offered a lot of exciting projects, from book deals to multi-million dollar contracts with the likes of Spotify and Netflix.
Sadly, they’re only running at half their former strength after losing their Spotify deal and receiving a downgraded contract renewal from Netflix. Yeah, Prince Harry could always choose to throw caution to the wind and write another memoir, but these days, the couple’s power is slipping.
In the midst of this, Meghan has tried her hardest to stabilize the situation, from launching a business to returning to Instagram and even producing more shows for Netflix.
Meghan Markle the Driving Force Behind Netflix’s Continued Partnership with the Sussexes
This year has seen Meghan Markle release two seasons of ‘With Love, Meghan’ and prepare to make a comeback with a Christmas special, whilst Harry has been mostly on the sidelines.
This new shift in Netflix’s dealings was likely inspired by the dismal ratings Harry’s ‘Polo’ received, and now Meghan is seen as the major moneymaker of the two.
“Netflix has learned that Meghan is the one with the media instincts. She’s polished, camera-ready, and understands how to build a brand,” a senior production source tells RadarOnline, adding that at the same time, “Harry’s ideas haven’t worked – the audience just isn’t there. At this point, she’s the face of the business and he’s taking a back seat.”
So practically what this means is that Meghan’s is more or less the only one with a seat at the table. Whilst ‘Invictus’ brought in some numbers, ‘Polo’ just couldn’t find its audience. “Harry wanted to show a side of the sport that people hadn’t seen,” but “It didn’t connect,” the source noted.
On the other hand, even though Meghan’s numbers are not so great as well, she at least gets attention – from fans and critics alike – enough to make Netflix believe that she’s worth their dough.
“Meghan’s work might divide opinion, but it gets attention. That’s what Netflix cares about.”
“The streamer wants to keep her on board.” They added, “Harry’s creative role has been reduced to producing credits and behind-the-scenes work. He’s lost momentum.”
But who knows? Maybe Harry’s planning his comeback even as we speak.
