How do the makers hope to keep this momentum and significance alive in the coming years? It doesn’t hurt stealing an idea or two from Disney’s ‘Mickey Mouse.’
For now, a movie has been greenlit, and guess which big name has been attached as the director? Paul King of ‘Wonka’ and ‘Paddington’ fame.
All We Know About the Upcoming ‘Labubu’ Movie
Our favorite plushy dolls are coming to the big screen soon in a live-action adaptation that could possibly explore the devilish collectibles origin.
You might not know this, but Labubu didn’t just spring up in 2025 to become the Pop Mart behemoth that it became. The dolls have been in existence for a decade now, making their debut in a series of picture books.
However, its meteoric rise this year was one for the history books, sweeping from K-pop giant LISA and infiltrating Hollywood’s elite circles. If the celebrities were vying for a Labubu of their own, how could the average person escape the psyche?
TikTok accounts soon became flooded with them, and the blind box effect helped sell the mystery and push it to the top of the toy food chain. The competition they presented was so fierce, Mattel and Hasbro could only humbly bow out.
Produced and sold exclusively in China-based retailer Pop Mart, Labubus have indeed come a long way from the fictional characters created by Hong Kong-born artist, Kasing Lung.
Of course, even though Pop Mart is hard at work coming up with other toy designs that could match or even eclipse – good luck with that – Labubu’s influence, they still know the importance of the cuddly monsters.
So, in the hopes of turning the collectibles into a Mickey Mouse-like IP, they’ve partnered with Sony Pictures to give them a more life-like semblance. With such a veteran like Paul King at the helm, we may have ourselves another ‘Barbie.’
