A Santa Ana man was sentenced ahead of the weekend for a DUI crash. Unfortunately, the crash involved the death of a little boy named Jacob Ramirez. Read on to find out what sentence Ceferino Ascencion got and whether he deserved it.
The Judge Dished A Harsh Sentence
KTLA5 News reported on the case this week, and explained that the judge took a hard line with the true crime offender. In fact, the outlet noted that he’ll serve “16 years and four months” behind bars. That’s despite him pleading guilty.
The original incident that happened in July last year, came with horrific results. A family went out riding on “e-bikes” but they suddenly found themselves at the center of a tragedy. Mom, Angela, had a 7-month-old baby in a trailer. Meanwhile, her husband, Angel, had the five-year-old boy and his bigger sister.
Well Over The Limit
At the time, Ceferino Ascencion drove with “a blood alcohol level” that was almost three times the legal limit. Apart from killing the five-year-old boy, other members of the family were also injured. The outlet noted that Angel ended up with a head injury that led to months of hospitalization. Meanwhile, little Angela celebrated her birthday in a hospital ward.
Additionally, the baby also sustained injuries. Fortunately, the scene had witnesses, who provided the information that the family were obeying the rules of the road. One of those witnesses chased after Ceferino Ascencion, who didn’t stop to assist anyone.
Eventually, the police were able to stop the man. Pleading guilty, he ended up being sent to prison for “gross vehicular manslaughter” and fleeing the scene.

One of them opined, “If you kill someone while under the influence they should automatically get life in prison!! Its happening way too often!”
Other responses indicated that more than 16 years should have been given to the DUI driver. Here are a few of those replies:

- Only 16 years in prison and he is out and yet this family has to live with this loss for life…that’s not right.
