Serious true crime isn’t confined to the USA, and this weekend, the news arrived that a court in the UK gave Akanksha Adivarekar an indefinite hospital order. It came after a murder case. Read on for more details about the grim events.
Suffering From Mental Illness
The court concluded that her actions were strongly influenced by severe mental illness and that she was not driven by malice or intent. Treatment rather than punishment was, of course, the main focus throughout the judge’s delivery of the verdict. In fact, she killed her four-year-old baby boy.

The Daily Mail reported on the case and its shocking aspects. According to the outlet, the “influencer mother” who killed her young child was “handed a hospital order.” Plus, they outlined why the court took the action of hospitalization rather than a prison sentence.
The Crime Details
Adivarekar, 37, who hails from Dunholme End, arrived at a hospital in Maidenhead and shocked medical professionals with her appearance. Incredibly, she previously worked in healthcare, but later, she took up an HR position at Burnham Grammar School. Additionally, she opted out of full-time work to pursue her dream of creating a children’s book to build her image online. Friends and colleagues of the woman described her as loving, a goal-getter and very sweet with her son.
Unfortunately, her mental state took a drastic turn in June. The court heard that she climbed into bed with her four-year-old son, Agastya Hegishte. Then, she stabbed him 11 times in the neck. Naturally, the child died. Then, perhaps feeling remorseful, Akanksha Adivarekar placed him in the bath and cuddled the kid. Next, she decided that drinking drain cleaner was the way to resolve her issues.
Incredibly, she managed to catch a bus to a hospital and arrived there covered in blood. Notably, she was still wearing her dressing gown, so it makes one wonder what the bus driver and other passengers thought was going on. Needless to say, she was arrested and charged. While in custody, it seems that she might have tried to blame her husband for the death, and she claimed she’d “saved her son.”
Manic Episode
If you follow the soap opera General Hospital, you will probably know that Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) advocates for mental health issues as he’s bipolar. Well, it turns out that Adivarekar was in a bipolar manic episode when she committed her grisly true crime. Sadly, after her diagnosis in India about six years ago, her mental health didn’t improve, although she’d asked her local GP for help.
The diminished responsibility was assessed by three independent medical experts who concluded a lack of personal responsibility for the terrible death of her child. In fact, it was very sad all round and even the judge called it “utterly tragic.” Convinced that if she’d been in her right mind, the little boy wouldn’t have died, he declined to send her to prison.
Instead, she’s been detained under an indefinite hospital order under the Mental Health Act. Any hope of her release will be allowed only if the Ministry of Justice or a Mental Health Tribunal consents to it.
The Husband Seems Forgiving
Here’s the real tragedy: Her husband seemed forgiving, but obviously broken-hearted. He described his son as “my joy, my pride, my reason for living.” But then, he said that one day, when she gets better, he still hopes that Akanksha Adivarekar will publish her children’s book.
