Sharon’s life will crash yet another time on Y&R. Longtime fans will question the need to kill off her husband in this manner if the above plays out as has been teased.
Fans also recall, and newer viewers have learned through dialogue and flashback scenes, that Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes) died due to injuries suffered in a car crash and that Faith Newman (as then played by Alyvia Alyn Lind) was badly hurt in a recent truck crash.
Cassie was killed off because TPTB at the time decided to write Case and Joshua Morrow’s (Nick Newman) characters in different directions. The haunting death in May 2005 remains one of Y&R’s all-time most controversial decisions.
Grimes was a child actor at the time. Her character was beloved. So, killing Cassie off in her teen years was seen as needless.
Fans know that Cassie did not leave the scene forever. Sharon and Nick saw Cassie’s spirit on numerous occasions through the years. Then, in 2014, Grimes returned to the cast. She became a regular contract player again when she began portraying Cassie’s unknown identical twin, Mariah Copeland (Grimes). That decision felt like a partial, welcomed nod to devoted fans. It was also good for the show, as Grimes is a gifted actor.
Having Faith begin to pal around with a mean friend seemed a bit pushed and too similar to Cassie’s later days.
Lind’s burgeoning career created opportunities beyond Y&R, which led to a spotlight story line that ended her run on the show.
Thankfully, Faith survived. That accident also opened the door to the sweet relationship Faith has with Moses Winters (Jacob Aaron Gaines).
The recast to Reylynn Caster (Faith) has gone smoothly. The new actor has not yet worked a meaty story line. But Rey’s passing creates an opportunity for Caster and Case to share meaningful scenes.
Vilasuso has a solid resume and performed well. It is fair to ask if this actor was given enough challenging story lines to work or if his character’s arc was skillfully developed?
Rey had potential when he arrived in Genoa City, Wisconsin, in 2018. His death removes the remaining active member of the Rosales family from the show, which is unfortunate.
Fans will ask if Rey’s exit was handled correctly. And why kill him off rather than write him out of the show?
Of course, this is soap. Rey could always return someday. Also, Vilasuso could come back as another character, or so fans of this solid, well-liked actor can hope.
