The Young and the Restless Spoilers: Steve Burton’s Daytime Emmy Win Potentially Caps Career – Dylan and Jason Both Memorable

Steve Burton (Dylan), formerly of ‘The Young and the Restless’, took home his second-ever Daytime Emmy Award this weekend. His win, as the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, might be the last he’ll ever receive. As Y&R fans know, he voluntarily left the show and the soap opera industry late last year.

Citing a desire to spend more time with his family, to explore new business ventures and to play with his band Port Chuck, Burton opted to not renew his contract with daytime’s ratings’ leader. He informed Y&R of his decision with plenty of lead time, which allowed a solid sendoff to be plotted by the combined writing teams headed by Chuck Pratt, Junior and then by Sally Sussman (with Sussman’s staff handling Dylan’s Miami Vice-esque ending).

Some in the audience may question whether Burton’s efforts were Emmy-worthy. The actor’s work during his run as Dylan wasn’t controversial, including the 2016 efforts that he earned honors for. However, it is fair to ask if his character’s work supporting Sharon’s (Sharon Case) most recent baby dilemma, which comprised the bulk of his efforts, was the strongest supporting actor work delivered in 2016?

This author fully respects Burton’s daytime career efforts, along with the other points on his acting resume. Clearly, he’ll always be most associated with Jason Morgan (ABC’s General Hospital), as that classic character made him famous. Dylan was a smart secondary choice, as he was a vulnerable good guy.

If this scribe had a vote, he likely would have been thinking about Burton’s legacy during the final award selection process. The possibility to use his 2016 Emmy nomination as a message of career kudos would have been part of the thought process. Yes, human subjectivity is fully linked to artistic critique.

An exact comparison to the other fine actors who were also nominated is challenging, which is true for all other categories each year. One couldn’t say that Burton performed poorly during his final full year as Dylan, or that he wasn’t compelling. So the nomination itself isn’t really debatable.

But here’s a final point to ponder for all who are still questioning Burton’s impact. Is an actor missed when he (or she) leaves a show? In this case, this scribe says yes.

While Y&R’s strong ensemble will carry on, Dylan was an important part of Genoa City. That point, along with Burton’s overall work last year, tips the scales in his favor. Yes, he was Emmy-worthy.
