The Young and the Restless: Sally Sussman Puts Humor Back In Genoa City – Lighthearted Storytelling Lives

The Young and the Restless: Sally Sussman Puts Humor Back In Genoa City - Lighthearted Storytelling LivesSally Sussman and her team are injecting what has been missing on ‘The Young and the Restless‘ for many years, humor. Oh, there will always be people within the audience who refuse to acknowledge, or pretend not to recognize comedy. But it’s undeniably made a strong comeback in Genoa City. So much so that even Victor (Eric Braeden) has been seen smiling on many occasions.

Dark storylines involving horrible crimes, murder, strange baby matters, and other unsavory items were pushed on Y&R in the recent past. Some people claim to believe that atmosphere should dominate daytime and the real world. But those travelers are merely misguided.

Soap operas have always seemed to elicit the strongest sustained responses when they focused upon issues audience members relate to. And most members of Y&R’s audience would gladly admit that humor is an important part of their lives.

The return of Judith Chapman (Gloria) was a lightning strike that indicated fun was trending in Wisconsin. This great actor nails every scene she appears in. ‘Glo’ was smartly written back into the story and is hopefully set for an indefinite run.

The trouble she’ll cause Michael (Christian LeBlanc), Kevin (Greg Rikaart) and other connected characters will surely delight fans endlessly. And speaking of Kevin, his reunion with Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) offers plenty of opportunities for mayhem. ‘Khloe’ is an upbeat comedy team when measured and poured correctly.

Ravi Shapur (Abhi Sinha) is a promising new character addition. Sinha has been spot on as a nerdy coder, correction, software engineer. Ravi’s crush on Ashley (Eileen Davidson) has also been played nicely. Yes, it’s normal for a guy to become distracted when he’s around an attractive woman. Sussman is painting that response with a sympathetic and compassionate brush, rather than having made him a stalker, or worse.

Billy (Jason Thompson) is best when he makes Vickie (Amelia Heinle) smile. The insertion of Reed (Tristan Lake Leabu) into Miss Newman’s two-child house, creates a solid dynamic that should afford regular opportunities for laughter and assistance from her once and possibly future husband.

Of course serious issues will continue to be explored on Y&R. But when those stories are countered by playful humor a more balanced show will exist. It appears as though the good old days weren’t gone forever. And yes, that is a subjectively chosen opinion.
