The Young and the Restless Kristoff and Mia St. John Channel Love in Right Direction – Mental Health Awareness and Facility Reform SpotlightedToday’s feature isn’t about the character (Neil Winters) he plays on ‘The Young and the Restless’. Instead, this article’s focus is on the character exhibited by Kristoff St. John and his ex-wife, Mia St. John, as their fight for the dignity of all who face mental illness continues.

Julian St. John was 24-years old when he passed away in November 2014. His death was ruled a suicide. Julian, who was living with schizophrenia, was in La Casa Psychiatric Health Facility at the time.

According to the St. John’s, La Casa’s surveillance footage showed that their son wasn’t being checked on in regular 15-minute intervals as was expected. More than an hour is said to have passed from the time Mia St. John last spoke to Julian by phone on November 23, 2014, until a member of the facility’s staff found that he had committed suicide.

Initial reform at La Casa Psychiatric Health Facility has already resulted due to the St. John’s efforts. Other mental health facilities are believed to have instituted more stringent safety policies since that time as well.

Kristoff and Mia St. John told Entertainment Tonight,

“I watched that video and I saw my son talking to me on the phone and he hung up the payphone and he went into his room and they didn’t check on him,” Mia notes. “Time went by and I couldn’t help but think my son was dying at that moment.”

Kristoff continued on, saying he believes the corporation will “do business differently now.”

“Well, we know that they have already taken out the plastic bags and a lot of mental health facilities have taken over that policy since my son’s death,” Mia added. “I will fight for the rest of my life until something is done. Because there are other kids that are left in these facilities that have no voice and no one to speak out for them.”

The St. John’s recently settled a lawsuit against the facility out of court. All realized funds have been used to set up a foundation in Julian’s name to raise awareness about mental health.

“We do not want to lose any more mentally ill patients who are not receiving the proper care from their caregivers,” the St. John’s said.
