‘General Hospital’ Interview: Rebecca Herbst Talks Liz’s Behavior, Jason, Fans Angry Reaction – ‘I Did a Great Job’

“General Hospital” fans have been pretty vocal in their opinions about Elizabeth Webber [Rebecca Herbst] the past couple months. The talented actress has had her share of negativity to weather after Liz hid the truth about Jason Morgan’s [Billy Miller] real identity.
Rebecca Herbst explained to Soap Opera Digest it was difficult for her to portray Liz in this way—she seemed to change overnight in an attempt to keep her man from learning the truth. Her fear was not unfounded. Sam [Kelly Monaco] and Jason shared a life together, and that life [or even the idea] of that life could be enough for Liz to lose Jason.
Rebecca remembered feeling outraged about the complete change in Liz when the writers gave her a ‘new Elizabeth’ to portray. Rebecca noted, “I first said, wait a minute! This is not right. Elizabeth would not do this.”
Elizabeth’s script was flipped and the writing was so out of character. Rebecca explained she decided to embrace the personality changes and make it as believable as possible. She explained she made a list rationalizing why it was okay for Liz to keep this secret. After all, Liz had to believe she was doing the correct thing by keeping Jason’s identity a secret. After a while, Rebecca convinced herself it was the right thing to do, which came through in Liz’s on-screen performance. Rebecca stated that she appreciated her fans [and haters] comments about her performance as Liz Webber. She is open to hearing both negative and positive comments—as when people start talking about your character, it means she was doing her job well.
Herbst explained she had spent two weeks defending herself against angry fans after the truth came out on “General Hospital.” She noticed that fans were emotionally connected to the storyline, and their reaction meant that her portrayal of Elizabeth was spot on.

That wasn’t a role thats new to Liz, she’s lied to Lucky, Nichlos and Jason (old)and Jason (new) have the writers even seen this soap.
Elizabeth is a bad person but the actress is very good actress and deserve an Emmy
Rebecca is fantastic, but I’m not sure where she gets the idea that this is a “new” Liz. Lying, cheating and manipulating have all been very active aspects of Liz’s character for at least the last 10 years.
I agree Sandra, I guest Liz/Rebecca doesn’t realize she lies even now in her interview. Her character has been so insecure & lying since the beginning.
Very rude comment. Rebecca is an fantastic actress, she has been ACTING since she was 6 years old. If you want to make comments about the character or role that’s appropriate. When you make a comment about her personally and I know you don’t know her on that level ( just like I don’t), that is rude and uncalled for.

tptb/writers really need to redeem the character of elizabeth and they should not have even gone that route with her – she is the only character left on the campus related to dr steve hardy who was the corner stone of general hospital……………jmo

Yes, part of my love of Elizabeth is her connection to the original characters…especially Dr. Steve Hardy and Audrey. I want her to have happiness and a mob-free Jason. I understand if all the characters are happy- there is no Soap Opera- no action, no anger, no betrayal, no longing…it would be boring!
I did not think that this behavior was out of character for Liz. She has lied in the past when it made her life better. She cheated on Lucky with Nik, and lied. She did not tell Jason when she found out that Danny was really still alive and was not the baby who had died…
She was a sweet girl when she was in high school and first got involved with Lucky, but she has been going down this very selfish path for a long time…

I don’t think they should put them together Sam and Jason I think would b good together u c c it when they r playing the part how magic they have they r the next Luke & Lauraand we need a Luke and Laura story line its been along time and we need that edge of sitting on our chair waiting to c what happens next and can’t wait to c GH
I agree with those that say it was in character for Liz…she always wanted what she couldn’t have. I know i am a minority but i find Rebecca way overacting and can’t even watch the scenes of Liz trying to explain herself. On top of that the total lack of chemistry between she and Billy Miller brings his acting way down.His best scenes were with Sam trying to figure out who he is and with Sonny.
I agree and after watching this soap since it began, I will never watch it again if Liz gets back together with Jason. It will destroy the show.
A character or the Soap is not about one couple or person. I’m glad you like Jason and Sam. But your very Wrong. Liz has Chemistry with every male and female she is in a scene with. You don’t realize it because all you think about is Jasam. Here is a good point you would not be so angry about Liz/ Rebecca if she was not killing it on screen and she is. this new Jason will never be with Sam those days are long gone. I don’t about Liz but he has loved Liz as Jason and as Jake Doe with no Jason memories. That’s true love story if I ever watched one. 21 years Jason and Liz have been friends turned lovers turn friends back to lovers. You can’t add Sam into that anywhere. So I guess bye.

Rebecca did a phenomenal job with the crappy story line. She should win an award . I think TPTB want to fire her again and wanted to make it so the fans did not miss her. I will always be a RH fan and a Liason fan and now I am hoping they cancel GH. The horrible writing has gone on too long. The character assassination of Rebecca Hearbst character. The horrible writing for Sabrina’s baby storytelling. I mean I forgot Carlos existed. No one missed him but yet they brought him back for what? The Denise/Ava fiasco. Carly running around town telling people how terrible they are… Pot/kettle. Carly is the last person who should running around time berating people. That’s like Sonny giving a lecture on the horrible effects of organized crime. I don’t recognize the characters anymore and have become frustrated with being force fed jasam like they have a this amazing love story when the truth is there was a Liz and Jason before Sam weasled her way into town. Jason chose Sam bc she could handle his violent life style. And did not have children that could be targeted. Then she says to Jason she broke up with Patrick bc she loved Jason more….. That’s creative. He broke up with her to protect his heart and Emma bc sh was being dishonest and trying to ensure she would not end up alone. And wanted to have him as a consolation prize if Jason did not remember her.
I agree with everything you said. I have always been a fan of Jason with Liz. I find it funny how Carly and Sonny just want “old” Jason back just so he can be at their beck and call like before and truthfully I think Sam only wants him back because she craves danger. I know it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a law abiding, normal Jason but to be honest I’ve been tired of the mob crap on the show. Yes Liz was wrong for hiding the truth for so long but GH needs to seriously consider that while the Jasam fans have been more vocal, not all GH fans want Sam & Jason together & you can definitely count me among them. How soon we all forget that Sam came in as Sonny’s little side tramp….which is only 1of many reasons why I never liked her with Jason. Hope he forgives Liz & gets back with her!
Yeh. Sam lied to Jason when she told him that she broke up with Patrick. Patrick broke up with her. She was going to go ahead and marry Patrick. Never felt this big “lovefest” everyone else seems to have for Sam & Jason, but I remember Elizabeth & Jason’s history. Jake and Liz started a relationship when he had this latest accident way before she knew he was Jason. So, again the chemistry was there. He’s got a lot to think about.
I agree. I wish they would let Liz redeem herself. She has always been one of my favorite characters, and this story felt like a way to destroy her character. I hope they reinvent her with Franco’s help. Maybe she will get back into art, and become successful, it would be nice to see her make some good changes and turn this crappy story around.
I agree – even though Liz has lied to Lucky and Jason, Lucky cheated and lied first and Jason did not have to sleep with Liz – hmm Sam seducing and sleeping with Rick. So Liz isn’t always the bad one and Sam did not break up with Patrick, he broke up with her because he didn’t want his heart broken or Emma’s and then she went back over to Patrick after she saw Jason – and then Patrick and Sam both agreed that it was not good for them to be together. Yes, why would Patrick want to be second choice. Sam didn’t know if Jason would go back to her, so she goes back to Patrick’s house for a man back up. Not fair.
I love this story line and I am rooting for her. She was the one who stood by Jason when he had no where to go. She stepped aside when Hayden came in with her lies. She loved before she knew he was Jason. Yeah she should have told him but I can understand her fear of losing him. Sam and Jason are an old story. Been there done.
Liz and Jason are old story……like way old and done and over. I have never liked Elizabeth. She is too needed and always has to lie to keep a man and throws away the ones that actually care about her. Example: Lucky and Nik. She needs to go. Jason and Sam were meant to be as they accepted each other for who they are with flaws and everything and they were not boring couple just like Luke and Laura. Remember Jason is not perfect either.
Liz is an awesome actress. The problem was the script. The problem with the Sams fans and Carlys Fans is that they forget that Sam and Carly both have done just as bad or worse that Liz . Plus the fans all forget that it is the script that all of them act out ,not what they want to do if it was left up to them,
Sam is a sleaze bag and so is Carly . Not that any of there fans see it . Liz made just as many but at least she isn’t a sleaze bag. The problem with all of the fans for these two is that you see all Lizs bad faults but none of Sams or Carlys.
It is downright torturous to watch the non-chemist between BM/KM characters. TIIC or PTB need to realize that the little bit of chemistry that SB/KM had is just not there and please stop trying to recreate it as it’s just not translating on screen. Liz and jason started out as friends and it developed into love, it only intensified after she found out it was jason. For gosh sakes, we’ve been waiting 16 years for this untold love story. Either let it play out and either it sizzles or it fizzles. Lets build back up ELQ, GH and the quartermaines that is the backbone of GH. Enough of the mob entity…get back to the love in the afternoon we were promised but has not been delivered. How can it when you’ve changed every freaking character we have no idea who is who. Sabrina lying, dante cheating with a family member, Liz carrying a lie for 7 months yet throughout all this sam still retains g her shiny halo…please stop trying to chuck jasuck (jassm) down our throats. That horse is dead already, stop beating it.
Tired of Sam…she allowed Elizabeth and Jason’s son to be kidnapped, lied about it and then hired some thugs to terrorize Elizabeth and her boys. She slept with Carly’s husband, got pregnant and glommed onto Jason. She’s lied and lied to Jason…she’s no better than a criminal herself.
Jason and Liz are are family members of two of the best families on the show…they have a legacy love that a con artist tries to tarnish. That Sam slept with her mother’s husband! She’s a mess and Jason – especially this new Jason- shouldn’t be tarnished with her stain.
Becky has been outstanding in her role as Liz. Murderers, kidnappers and criminals are redeemed consistently. Liz should & will be redeemed. She is flawed like every other character on GH. I hope to see more Liz & Jason in the future, love the chemistry ❤️
Rebecca has done a great job with a horrible story. I do like Liz and Jason. Hope they make it. Sam and Jason have no chemistry. Sam and Carly are hypocrits. The writers are so blatant with their revisionist history for certain characters

I love Liz and Jason together! Always have, please give them a chance! Rebecca Herbst is an excellent actress. Her and Jason’s backstory is very good and strong. They have always loved each other but, something or someone always got in the way. It is about time Liz found some happiness after all the pain and struggles she has had. Jason and Sam’s story has always been kinda boring to me. I for one would love for Liz and Jason to stay together!
Sam and Jason belong together! Liz and Jason have no chemistry whatsoever, its so hard to watch the two of them! Liz has never and will never truly understand Jason, Sam however does, and accepts him for him, and has never tried to change him or sway him to be someone different. These two could be the next Luke and Laura, if written correctly! I agree Rebecca is a great actress, but her character needs to be connected to Lucky or Nicolas, its fits way better!!
They need Greg Vaughan (Lucky) to come back for Elizabeth
Love Liz! All soaps need a few trouble makers.Rebecca is GREAT! Recast Lucky so she can fall in love with him again. Greg would be great since he is leaving Days.
